Tobacco Probe Nets More Than 100 Arrests

A state undercover operation has netted more than 100 charges for underage tobacco sales in northwest North Carolina in July.
Alcohol Law Enforcement agents used a teenager under 18 years old to try to buy cigarettes, cigars and snuff. Agents checked 597 stores in 18 counties -- including Davidson, Guilford, Stokes and Yadkin.
If convicted, the clerks could pay a $1,000 fine and do 30 hours of community service.
ALE Director Mike Robertson says he hopes the campaign will emphasize how important it is for store clerks to check the IDs of young people to be sure they aren't selling tobacco or alcohol to underage children.
