Here are the results of a survey of high school and middle school students conducted last fall in North Carolina.
38.3 percent of high school students had used tobacco products (cigarettes, spit tobacco, cigars and pipes) in the past 30 days.
18.4 percent of middle school students had used tobacco products in the past 30 days.
31.6 percent of high school students had smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days.
15.0 percent of middle school students had smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days.
46.0 percent of high school students have smoked a cigar.
22.4 percent of middle school students have smoked a cigar.
58.8 percent of high school smokers have tried to quit smoking at least once.
64.7 percent of middle school smokers have tried to quit smoking at least once.
16.1 percent of high school smokers say they first smoked before age 11.
28.6 percent of middle school smokers say they first smoked before age 11.
28.9 percent of high school users of smokeless tobacco say they first used it before age 11.
55.5 percent of middle school users of smokeless tobacco say they first used it before age 11.
