MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish smokers finding it hard to kick the habit are being offered comfort and support from an unexpected quarter -- their mobile phones.

By sending messages such as ``Have a cold shower!'' ``Come on! You can do it'' and ``Lay off the drink!'' mobile messaging company Myalert.com hopes to marry new technology with good old-fashioned advice. The company has unilaterally declared war on the cigarette industry, vowing to help Spaniards -- among Europe's biggest tobacco addicts -- to stop. Since the start of the year, any Spanish smoker with a mobile phone can receive the handy tips on their phones free of charge, sent at times when their willpower is most likely to ebb. ``With this type of service our aim is to prove that new technology is revolutionizing our way of life. In this case, we'll be very proud if can get at least a small percentage of our users to give up tobacco,'' said Myalert Chairman Jorge Mata. There was no mention of how to deal with a mobile phone addiction.
