Smokeless Tobacco: It's Dangerous & Addictive
03/27/99
According to the Pennsylvania Dental Association, smokeless tobacco can be as dangerous and addictive as other tobacco products.
However, it shifts the disease process from the lungs to the mouth. Individuals using smokeless tobacco are at risk of developing severe health problems including Cancer of the mouth and throat, Leukoplakia, Heart Diseases, Birth Defects and even Tooth and Gum diseases like discoloration, halitosis, receding gums, cavities and sores. The risk of developing oral cancer for smokeless tobacco product users ranges upto 11 times that of non-users. In an effort to inform people about the dangers of using smokeless tobacco products, the Alliance of the American Dental Association is using testimonials of role models like Major League Baseball's home run hero, Mark McGuire, to show young people that smokeless tobacco is not a "cool alternative."
