Japan Moves To Cut Smoking

A Japanese government panel on Thursday proposed a campaign to cut the nation's tobacco consumption in half by 2010, a Health Ministry official said.
The Council on Public Health unveiled the plan as part of a 10-year national project to improve the nation's health, dubbed ``Healthy Japan 21,'' ministry official Hiroshi Saito said.
The ministry will begin implementing the project next year, and the council currently is setting numerical goals in nine categories, including tobacco and alcohol, Saito said.
