Therefore, if to look at history of the cigarette packs development, special attention should be paid not of what they are made, but what was shown on them. At the end of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century due to the scarce opportunities of printing industry, in the design of cigarette packs predominated typographic inscriptions with the brand name.
More recent examples reflected ascetic designed packs, where the main design element was font and text size (cigarette packages with considerable large inscriptions on the front part of the packing). At the same time become a tradition to place on the front part of the pack - heraldic coat of arms and other attributes and symbols referred to different historical epochs (for ex. Philip Morris, 555, Bond, etc), this tradition is still alive today, but they became smaller and remained only as a symbol of the brand.
Other, more modern trend were cigarette packs designed with a variety of graphics solutions, which become trendy in the '70s.
We should also mention about cigarette pack's design dedicated to a variety of topics - from cats, to cars (Magna cigarette brand logo and Gauloises Blue Way). Cigarettes for sailors (old version of Ark Royal cigarettes), aviators, communists, for nature lovers (old UK cigarette brand Fair), etc.
Of course, the most recognizable character was Camel cigarette brand with a camel image on the package. Packs with camel as the trademark and brand logo remained till today, they have already more than 100 years old.
It is true that progress is driven by advertising. The Marlboro company management when looked for ways to increase the cigarette sales invented a new type of cigarette packs called "flip-top". Previously, cigarettes were packed in paper or cardboard packs. "Flip-top" cigarette packaging helped Marlboro brand to become more advertised.
"British American Tobacco", a longtime rival of Marlboro cigarette brand, released for its cigarettes brand a new type of packing - "humidor" (like cigar packing name). Using such a name, British American Tobacco company wanted to emphasize the highest quality of its cigarettes.
