No smoking within 50 feet of Suffolk County buildings

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (AP) -- Smoking is no longer allowed near Suffolk County office buildings, legislators said.
The Suffolk County Legislature approved a 50-foot buffer zone Tuesday night. Smokers must now stand at least 50 feet away from county building and hospitals.
Legislator Angie Carpenter said nonsmokers should not have to make their way through a cloud of smoke to enter a county building.
Other resolutions adopted at the legislative general meeting include requiring "apprenticeship training" programs for contracts with the county and a plan to encourage the adoption of pets in the county.
