Study: Early teens at risk of falling for tobacco lures
06/20/02
One-third of nonsmoking adolescents are considered susceptible to smoking, with risk factors such as owning tobacco promotional items, tobacco advertising and exposure to others' smoking, a new study reports.
Researchers found that children ages 13-14 were almost three times more likely than older adolescents to be susceptible to smoking. In addition to exposure to other smokers, owning or willingness to own tobacco promotional items, having a favorite cigarette advertisement, skipping school, poor school performance and lack of attendance in religious activities were also associated with susceptibility to smoke, reports the study in the June issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.
