RadioShack Big Ride Across America departs from Seattle on June 19th and makes its way across the Rockies, the Great Plains, the Mid-West, and the Alleghenies and ends up in Washington, DC on August 5th. Riders are expected to range in age from 18 to 70 and come from all walks of life.
``RadioShack is pleased to be the primary sponsor of this exciting event,'' said Jim McDonald, RadioShack senior vice president of marketing and advertising. ``The RadioShack Big Ride Across America is sure to focus the nation's attention on the good work done by the American Lung Association to fight lung disease. We hope it will also underline our extensive line of vital communications products.''
The funds raised will be used to support the programs of the riders' local Lung Associations. Asthma education in schools, camps for children with asthma, smoking prevention activities for teenagers, indoor and outdoor air quality programs, and critical lung disease research are just some of the programs that will be supported by The Big Ride.
RadioShack will provide monetary support as well as communications gear to help ensure the safety of riders and volunteers. The Big Ride crew, mostly volunteers, will use amateur radio to communicate from camp to camp and vehicle to vehicle to support the riders as they move an average of 80 miles a day. The ``mobile city'' of gear trucks, support vehicles, tents, catering wagons, showers and crew, spread out over many acres, will use RadioShack short-range two-way personal family radios to communicate.
