09/08/99
National Governors' Association (NGA) Chairman Utah Gov. Michael O. Leavitt and Vice Chairman Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening announced that the NGA Center for Best Practices will convene a conference, "The National Tobacco Settlement: Making the Money
"States understand that this settlement offers an incredible opportunity to reduce smoking in this country," said Govs. Leavitt and Glendening. "The settlement offers us the ability to address smoking cessation and prevention programs, health care, education, and programs benefiting children."
States view this settlement agreement as a historic opportunity to find and implement the most effective smoking cessation/tobacco prevention programs possible. States also will have the opportunity to discuss the details of the settlement and how they can ensure that each state truly makes the settlement money count. Additionally, states will sit down to address a number of vital decisions that must be made before any decisions about how to spend the money can be finalized.
