British Medical Association (BMA) Cymru Wales has welcomed the UK government's proposals to introduce picture warnings on tobacco packaging.
Graphic pictures on cigarette packets illustrating the damage caused by smoking will help cut the number of people dying from smoking related diseases in Wales, doctors' leaders said today.
Welsh Secretary of the BMA, Dr Richard Lewis said: "Every day, doctors across Wales see the devastating effects caused by smoking. The British Medical Association has led the campaign for a total ban on smoking in all enclosed public places and continues to support measures to inform people of the risks of smoking and help encourage people to reduce their smoking or quit altogether.
"We know from the experience of other countries such as Canada, Singapore and Brazil that they help to minimise uptake by young people, inform people of the truth, and help de-glamourise cigarette packs. More importantly, they let people know what they really get from smoking."
